Black fungus in five districts; 13 more confirmed

Kozhikode: Rare black fungal infections (mucormycosis) have been reported in 13 more cases in five districts of Kerala.

The victims were Palakkad, Edavanna, Vandoor, Vazhikkadavu, Cheruvayoor, Nilambur, Karulai, Etericode, Tirur, Malappuram district, Payyanakkal, Iringalur, and Kottayam districts.

In Kollam district, the health condition of a woman who underwent surgery due to an infection is satisfactory,  One eye of the Malappuram native had to be removed to prevent the infection from spreading to the brain.

Symptoms include a severe headache on one side, severe pain around the eyes, blurred vision, and black fluid coming out of the nose.

Two Kozhikode residents and five Malappuram residents are undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College. A native of Gudalur, Tamil Nadu has also been admitted here.

The victim, a native of Palakkad, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thrissur. Health officials said the woman, who also has diabetes, was not seriously affected by the black fungus.

Two patients from the Malappuram district are undergoing treatment at Manjeri Medical College.

The black fungus will not spread – CM

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that black fungus is not a disease transmitted from one person to another. He also urged others not to be afraid to provide necessary treatment and assistance to the sick.
