Major Earthquake Strikes Central Japan on New Year’s Day, Leaving Six Dead and Widespread Devastation

In a tragic turn of events on New Year’s Day, central Japan was hit by a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5, according to the US Geological Survey, and 7.6, as reported by Japanese authorities. The quake, centered in Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu, triggered tsunami waves over a meter high, causing extensive damage to homes, toppling buildings, and sparking a significant fire in Wajima. As of now, at least six people have lost their lives, and the scale of destruction is still unfolding.

Waves, reaching at least 1.2 meters, struck the port of Wajima, and smaller tsunamis were reported elsewhere. Fortunately, warnings of larger waves proved to be unfounded. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated, and around 32,700 households in the affected region remain without power. Emergency response efforts are underway, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructing the delivery of essential supplies to those in need. The images circulating on social media depict scenes of terrified people, collapsed houses, and damaged infrastructure, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance and relief efforts. The international community, including US President Joe Biden, has expressed readiness to provide support, and Japan is now grappling with the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster.
