Karnataka Mandates Mask-Wearing for Individuals Over 60 Amid JN.1 Subvariant Concerns

The Karnataka government has mandated the wearing of masks for individuals aged 60 and above, as well as those with heart and kidney conditions, and those experiencing symptoms like fever, phlegm, and colds. This decision comes amid concerns about the JN.1 subvariant of the coronavirus, which was detected in Kerala. Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that guidelines would be issued, and preparations were underway in hospitals and health centers. Rao emphasized the need for increased testing in border districts and urged people not to panic, assuring that the situation was under control.

The state’s proactive measures include mandatory testing for individuals with respiratory issues and other health problems, with a focus on border regions like Kodagu, Mangaluru, and Chamarajanagar. The minister expressed confidence that the severity of the situation would subside in the coming days. Despite the detection of the JN.1 subvariant in Kerala, India’s overall COVID-19 situation remains under control, with an active caseload of 1,828 as of Monday. The Union Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with the Kerala State Department of Health, emphasizing that the subvariant alone did not cause a reported death but was associated with multiple underlying health conditions.
