Kozhikode District Leads in Climate Change Impact Across India

A recent comprehensive study has unveiled alarming insights into the impact of climate change, with Kozhikode district in Kerala emerging as the most affected region among all districts in India. The research, focusing on a range of climatic parameters such as rainfall, floods, hot winds, droughts, whirlwinds, and recorded temperature extremes, revealed that Kozhikode faced the maximum extent of climate change over the observed period. Following closely behind is Cachar district in Assam, securing the second position on the list. The study, which aimed to assess the changing climate scenario, identified a total of ten districts in the country with elevated vulnerability to climate-related shifts, including Pathanamthitta in Kerala, Nagaon and Darrang in Assam, Chandel in Manipur, as well as districts in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

This unsettling revelation underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to address and mitigate the impacts of climate change in regions like Kozhikode, where communities are experiencing the tangible consequences of environmental shifts. As extreme weather events become more frequent, the findings highlight the importance of adaptive measures and sustainable practices to safeguard vulnerable communities and ecosystems across the country.
