The price of local turmeric (nadan manjal) in Kerala has surged dramatically in high-range markets due to a significant decline in production. Previously, dry turmeric was priced between Rs 100 and Rs 140 per kilogram. However, with reduced supplies, prices have now soared to Rs 200 to Rs 240 per kilogram.
Raw turmeric has also experienced a price increase, rising from Rs 15 to Rs 25 per kilogram. This sharp rise is attributed to a decline in turmeric cultivation in the high ranges of Kerala. Since 2019, many farmers have shifted from turmeric to more lucrative cardamom cultivation due to the rising prices of cardamom and the lower profitability of turmeric.
The decline in turmeric cultivation has been further exacerbated by its historically low prices and the increasing labor costs associated with drying the crop. This has led to a shortage of high-quality turmeric in the high ranges, driving up prices.
While a significant quantity of turmeric is sourced from Tamil Nadu, traders in Kerala note that it often falls short in quality compared to locally grown turmeric. As a result, mill owners in the region prefer to purchase high-quality turmeric from local traders.
Despite the influx of turmeric from Tamil Nadu, the demand for native high-range turmeric powder remains strong, with local markets favoring the superior quality and flavor of locally sourced products.
