Pineapple prices in Kerala are on the rise once again, with the Vazhakkulam Pineapple Growers Association reporting a sharp increase. Green pineapples are now priced at Rs 51 per kg, while the special grade variety has reached Rs 53 per kg, marking the highest rates in a decade. Ripe pineapples have also seen a price hike, now selling at Rs 57 per kg, a Rs 7 increase from last year. This rise comes after a brief period of stable prices, driven largely by increased demand, especially from North Indian markets during the upcoming festival season.
The surge in demand is attributed to major celebrations like Dussehra and Diwali, prompting inquiries from neighboring states. As a result, traders expect prices to continue climbing throughout October. To meet the growing demand, Kerala farmers have ramped up production, with daily pineapple output expected to reach 1,500 tonnes by next month.
On Saturday, a truckload of green pineapples weighing 10 tonnes sold for Rs 53 per kg, indicating strong demand not just locally but across other Indian states. Farmers from Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are also showing interest in expanding pineapple cultivation due to its growing popularity.
Earlier this year, Kerala’s pineapple farmers faced challenges due to drought conditions that impacted crop yields. However, with the upcoming festive season, they are hopeful that the spike in sales will offset earlier losses and lead to a successful harvest season.
