In a heated encounter in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Thursday, Kerala Blasters FC faced a tough 2-1 defeat against Hyderabad FC, a match marred by two controversial refereeing decisions that left fans furious. Supporters took to social media to express their anger over two crucial handball calls that both went against Kerala Blasters, with the second one resulting in a penalty for Hyderabad, ultimately deciding the match.
The first disputed incident occurred in the first half when Hyderabad’s Alex Saji appeared to use his left hand to clear a cross from Kerala’s Adrian Luna in the penalty area. Despite video replays suggesting a clear handball, the referee refrained from awarding a penalty to Kerala Blasters, inciting frustration among fans and players alike. Later in the second half, in the 68th minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Hyderabad following a handball review involving Kerala defender Ruivah Hormipam. Although replays indicated the ball may not have struck Hormipam’s arm, the referee held firm on his decision, allowing Hyderabad’s Andrei Alba to convert the penalty and secure his second goal of the game.
Kerala Blasters had taken an early lead in the 13th minute, thanks to a swift counter-attack initiated by 17-year-old Korou Singh, who became the youngest ISL player to record an assist. Singh skillfully set up Jesus Jimenez, who scored to put Kerala ahead 1-0. Despite the early advantage and dominant play, Kerala lost momentum following the injury of winger Mohammed Aimen, allowing Hyderabad to find an equalizer before halftime through Alba.
In the second half, both teams introduced fresh players to push for a decisive goal. Despite Kerala’s possession advantage, Hyderabad seized the lead through the controversial penalty, shifting the game in their favor. Kerala pressed hard in the final moments, but Hyderabad’s defense stood resolute, sealing the win. This marks Kerala Blasters’ third consecutive loss, increasing pressure as they prepare to face Chennaiyin FC on November 24, following the international break.
