Paris has once again been crowned the world’s most desirable city, securing the top spot in Euromonitor International’s Top 100 City Destinations Index for the fourth consecutive year. This recognition comes as the French capital celebrates a momentous 2024, marked by the reopening of the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral and its role as the host city for the Olympics.
The rankings, which assess cities on tourism, sustainability, economic performance, and health and safety, saw European cities dominate the top 10. Madrid secured the second position, followed by Tokyo in third, a standout performer from the Asia-Pacific region. Rome and Milan ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, while Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Madrid also made the cut. Tokyo’s rise was fueled by an influx of international tourists, spurred by a weak yen, while Sydney and Singapore secured eighth and ninth positions.
Delhi was the only Indian city featured, ranking 74th. Despite its strong showing, cities like London, which slipped from last year’s 10th spot to 13th, faced challenges in areas such as tourism policy and sustainability.
Notable global trends in tourism emerged in 2024, including the adoption of electronic travel authorizations and temporary visa-free programs, aimed at simplifying travel. However, overtourism remained a concern, prompting cities to introduce measures like visitor caps, restricted hours, and fines.
Bangkok emerged as the year’s most-visited city, drawing 32.4 million international travelers, while New York represented the U.S. in the top 10 at sixth place. The report highlights the growing focus on balancing tourism growth with sustainability, as destinations navigate the challenges of modern travel demand.
