New Delhi: Indian cricketer Sanju Samson has been excluded from Kerala’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy after failing to attend the mandatory preparatory camp. According to ESPNcricinfo, Samson had informed the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) about his unavailability for the camp, but the association maintained its policy of only including players who participated in the preparatory sessions.
Samson had captained Kerala in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, where the team fell just short of securing a knockout spot, winning four out of six matches. In his absence, batter Salman Nizar will lead the Kerala team in the upcoming 50-over domestic tournament. Former captain Sachin Baby, initially slated to play, has been ruled out due to an injury sustained during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The Kerala squad includes players like Rohan Kunnummal, Mohammed Azharuddeen, Basil Thampi, and Sijomon Joseph, among others. Meanwhile, Karnataka has also made a significant decision, leaving out veteran batter Manish Pandey. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has opted to prioritize younger talent, with Mayank Agarwal leading the squad and Shreyas Gopal as vice-captain.
KSCA selection committee chairman J Abhiram emphasized the need to transition from relying on seasoned players to nurturing emerging talents. “We cannot live in past glory; it’s time to bring in new blood,” Abhiram stated.
These developments highlight a shift in domestic cricket towards a greater focus on youth development and adherence to team policies. The Vijay Hazare Trophy will serve as a platform for both Kerala and Karnataka to showcase their revamped squads in pursuit of domestic glory.
