BSNL to Phase Out 3G Services Amid Network Struggles and Ongoing 4G Upgrades

The telecom giant aims to focus on improving 4G connectivity while ensuring continued 2G support for basic phone users

BSNL has announced plans to discontinue its 3G services, citing a decline in demand and ongoing network issues. As the only telecom provider in India to offer 2G, 3G, and 4G services, BSNL’s decision to retire 3G while continuing its 2G services aims to maintain reliable voice calling for users with basic phones, who still depend on 2G for communication. The 2G network is expected to provide clear, cost-effective voice services even as the company phases out older technologies and focuses on modernizing its infrastructure.

The move comes amid mounting customer complaints in Kerala, where BSNL users have been facing persistent call connectivity issues, including failed calls, distorted audio, and incorrect numbers. Despite efforts to upgrade the network, including the installation of 4G towers, service quality has not improved, leaving customers frustrated. BSNL attributes these disruptions to the ongoing trials and integration of new 4G equipment, which is causing network instability. The company is transitioning from the CPAN system to the MAN system, a necessary step to improve service quality.

BSNL has committed to resolving the issues by March, after the completion of the tower installations and system upgrades, which are expected to restore stable and reliable connectivity for its customers.
