Kottayam: In a shocking case of ruthless ragging, the Gandhi Nagar Police arrested five senior students from the Government Nursing College, Kottayam, on charges of physically and mentally abusing their juniors for almost three months. The arrested students include second-year nursing students Samuel Johnson (20) and Jeeva NS (19), along with third-year students Rahul Raj KP (22), Rijiljith C (21), and Vivek NV (21). Following the arrest, the college principal suspended all of them, and a case has been registered under the Prohibition of Ragging Act, 2011.
Harrowing Details of the Ragging Incident
According to the complaints filed by three first-year students, the accused seniors stripped them naked and inflicted extreme pain by placing dumbbells on their private parts. They also injured the victims with a compass and poured lotion on their wounds, worsening their suffering. The ragging occurred within the men’s hostel of the institution.
Reports indicate that when the juniors cried out in pain, the accused forcefully poured lotion into their mouths to silence them. Additionally, the seniors extorted Rs 800 from the victims to purchase alcohol and cover their personal expenses. In an attempt to cover up their crimes, the perpetrators forced the juniors to consume alcohol and filmed them, using the footage as a means of blackmail to prevent them from speaking out.
Complaint Filed After Severe Assault
Despite enduring relentless harassment for months, the victims remained silent out of fear. However, the situation escalated when one of the first-year students was brutally assaulted on Monday for refusing to give the demanded money. Unable to bear it any longer, he confided in his parents, who immediately advised him and his friends to approach the police.
Following their complaint, authorities swiftly intervened, leading to the arrest of the five accused students. The case has sparked widespread outrage, highlighting the prevalence of ragging in educational institutions and the need for stricter enforcement of anti-ragging laws.
College and Authorities Take Action
The Government Nursing College, Kottayam, operates under the jurisdiction of the Kottayam Government Medical College. Following the incident, the college administration suspended the accused students and assured that strict disciplinary actions would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
