With temperatures soaring in Kerala, the Labour Commissioner has issued a directive adjusting the working hours of labourers to protect them from extreme heat exposure. As per the latest order, all labourers must be provided a mandatory rest period from 12 PM to 3 PM to prevent heat-related illnesses. This directive will remain in effect until May 10.
Under the revised schedule, the standard eight-hour work shift will be conducted between 7 AM and 7 PM, with a compulsory three-hour break during the peak heat hours. This measure is aimed at reducing the risk of sunstroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration, which can pose severe health risks to those working in open environments under direct sunlight.
Heatwave Safety Advisory for the Public
Authorities have also issued a heatwave alert and advised the public to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Precautionary Measures:
✔ Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight between 11 AM and 3 PM.
✔ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of clean water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
✔ Avoid dehydrating beverages such as alcohol, coffee, tea, and carbonated soft drinks.
✔ Wear light, loose-fitting, and light-colored cotton clothing to stay cool.
✔ Use protective accessories like umbrellas, hats, and footwear when stepping outdoors.
✔ Consume water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables and stay nourished with ORS solution, buttermilk, and other cooling fluids.
Fire Safety Alert Issued
In addition to health concerns, authorities have warned of an increased risk of fire outbreaks in markets, buildings, waste disposal centers, and dumping yards due to the rising temperatures. Business owners and residents near such areas are urged to be extra cautious, conduct fire audits, and implement safety protocols to prevent potential fire hazards.
By adhering to these guidelines and cooperating with government measures, labourers and the general public can stay safe during the extreme summer heat.
