Palakkad Records India’s Highest Temperature at 38°C Amid Rising Heatwave Concerns

Experts Warn of Further Temperature Rise as Summer Approaches

Palakkad, Kerala – On Saturday, Palakkad recorded a scorching temperature of 38°C, marking the highest temperature in India for the day, as per data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This extreme heat, recorded even before peak summer months, has raised concerns about rising temperatures and potential heatwaves in the coming weeks.

According to Dr. M.S. Sreejith, Senior Scientist and Head of the Energy Division at Mundur IRTC, Palakkad has been experiencing a consistent increase in temperature over the past three years. In February 2024, the district had already witnessed 39.5°C, and experts predict that temperatures could soar past 41°C by mid-March. The primary reason behind this early surge in heat is the Palakkad Gap, a geographical feature that influences the region’s climatic conditions, making it prone to higher temperatures.

Rising Heat Triggers Safety Measures

With temperatures escalating across Kerala, the Labour and Skills Department has taken precautionary steps to safeguard outdoor workers. The government has adjusted outdoor working hours to protect laborers from excessive heat exposure. These new guidelines will remain in effect until May 10.

Nationwide Heatwave Alert

Meteorologists have warned that India is likely to face intense heatwave conditions over the next three and a half months. Rising global temperatures and climate change effects are exacerbating extreme weather patterns, leading to higher-than-usual temperatures earlier in the year.

As summer approaches, authorities are urging people to take necessary precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. With predictions of even hotter days ahead, Palakkad’s soaring temperatures highlight the growing urgency to address climate change and its impact on local weather patterns.
