Kerala Battles Intense Summer Heat and Rising Ultraviolet Rays

Temperatures Soar to 40°C; Orange Alert Issued in Six Districts

Kerala is experiencing an intense heatwave this March, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels. Kannur airport recorded a scorching 40°C, while Punalur and Palakkad have consistently seen temperatures between 37°C and 39°C. The Meteorological Department warns that the heat will intensify in the coming days, with most districts experiencing temperatures ranging from 36°C to 37°C. However, there is a silver lining as light rain is expected next week due to active easterly winds, offering some relief.

Adding to the heatwave concerns, the ultraviolet (UV) ray index has also risen significantly. Six districts—Kollam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Palakkad—are under an orange alert, with UV indices ranging from 8 to 10. Prolonged exposure to such high UV levels can lead to severe health issues, including skin diseases. Authorities advise avoiding direct sunlight between 11 AM and 3 PM to minimize risks.

A yellow alert has been issued for ten districts, including Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kozhikode, due to the extreme heat. To stay safe, residents are urged to drink plenty of water, use umbrellas or hats, wear light-colored clothing, and ensure proper ventilation indoors. Children should not be left in parked vehicles, and alcohol or caffeinated drinks should be avoided to prevent dehydration.

As Kerala grapples with this extreme weather, staying informed and taking preventive measures are crucial to safeguarding health and well-being.
