Beyond the Orgasm: What People Truly Value Most in Sex, According to Research

New Study Reveals Emotional Intimacy and Connection Matter More Than Physical Pleasure

Contrary to the long-held belief that orgasm is the ultimate goal of sex, a recent study has unveiled that what people truly cherish in intimate moments goes far beyond physical release. Published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, the research surveyed nearly 3,000 adults across the United States to understand what aspects of sex they value the most with their partners. The findings were eye-opening — only a small portion, around 231 respondents, highlighted orgasm as the best part of the experience.

Interestingly, the study found that emotional aspects of sex, such as feeling loved, secure, and emotionally connected, were far more commonly cited. Around 400 participants shared that the real joy of sex comes from how it makes them feel — seen, appreciated, and emotionally grounded. Another 300 individuals emphasized the deep emotional connection and sense of care they experience during intimacy, suggesting that for many, sex serves as a medium to strengthen love and understanding in their relationship.

Even the act of making their partner feel good took precedence over personal pleasure for 241 respondents. These people valued giving over receiving, highlighting a growing trend of empathy and mutual satisfaction in modern sexual dynamics.

Experts like Dr. Nicole Cirino explain that sex in a loving relationship triggers higher levels of oxytocin and mood-enhancing hormones, which help build trust, boost self-esteem, and strengthen bonds. Whether it’s through cuddling, soft kisses, or just being present, sex is increasingly being seen not just as a physical act but as an emotional and psychological experience that nourishes both partners.
