Waltz, a former Green Beret and Florida congressman, had been under intense scrutiny since mistakenly adding a journalist to a private Signal group where military plans, including potential strikes on Yemen’s Huthi rebels, were discussed. While President Trump praised Waltz for his dedication and service, internal tensions reportedly mounted over Waltz’s hawkish stance on Russia and Iran, which clashed with Trump’s diplomatic approach.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been appointed as interim National Security Advisor until a permanent replacement is chosen. Rubio will now oversee both key foreign policy roles during a crucial phase of Trump’s foreign policy agenda.
Although the White House and Vice President JD Vance characterized Waltz’s move as a “promotion,” political observers and critics link it directly to the Signal leak. Democrats have turned their focus to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is also alleged to have shared sensitive information in similar private chat groups. The scandal continues to generate political turbulence, especially with Waltz’s appointment requiring Senate confirmation, which could prolong media focus on the affair.
