As summer heat continues to scorch Kerala, a wave of relief is expected with the arrival of the southwest monsoon by May 27, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). However, as a prelude to the monsoon, isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h are forecasted between May 12 and May 14 across the state. The IMD has urged the public to take extreme caution during this period, emphasizing that lightning poses severe risks to both life and property.
The advisory includes detailed precautions such as moving indoors immediately after noticing thunderclouds, avoiding open spaces, and staying away from trees, water bodies, and electrical appliances. People are also cautioned not to venture onto terraces or playgrounds, especially during dark cloud cover. Special warnings have been issued for fishers and boat operators to halt activities at the first signs of a thunderstorm and seek shelter onshore. Residents are advised to secure loose items that might be carried away by wind, disconnect electrical devices, and avoid collecting water from taps or pipes during lightning.
Additional guidelines include staying inside vehicles during a thunderstorm (with windows closed), not showering or collecting rainwater during lightning, and ensuring pets are safely sheltered. Importantly, the public is reminded that victims of lightning strikes do not carry electrical charge, so immediate first aid should be administered without hesitation.
Special Note for Persons with Disabilities:
Authorities are urged to ensure accessible shelters and timely communication for individuals with disabilities. Neighbors and caregivers are encouraged to extend support in helping them move to safe locations promptly during adverse weather conditions.
With the monsoon approaching, these safety measures can save lives and reduce damage. The public is encouraged to remain alert and prepared.
