Even after the flames were extinguished, smoke continues to rise from the fire-ravaged building at Kozhikode’s New Bus Stand, where a massive blaze broke out recently. Fire and Rescue Services are still conducting inspections at the scene. The fire, which completely destroyed a textile store and warehouse, took over 10 hours to bring under control.
The origin of the fire remains uncertain, and authorities have not ruled out foul play. Investigators have highlighted that the building’s structural design posed a significant challenge to firefighting operations, and more critically, there were no fire safety systems in place. Reports suggest that the building violated multiple safety regulations and was constructed in an unscientific manner, severely hindering rescue efforts. It reportedly took over three hours for firefighters to even reach the second floor.
Initial estimates suggest a financial loss close to ₹50 crore. Due to the ongoing situation, restrictions have been imposed at the bus stand area today.
The fire broke out around 5 PM at a textile showroom near the New Bus Stand while the shop was operational and crowded. As soon as the fire spread, all occupants were safely evacuated. Flames engulfed both the first and second floors of the building.
Large quantities of school uniforms and garments had been stockpiled in anticipation of the school reopening season. As the fire intensified, burning clothes fell from upper floors, spreading thick black smoke across the city. This led to major traffic disruptions in surrounding areas. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
It took five and a half hours to fully contain the fire. A special fire engine from Karipur Airport and 14 units from Kozhikode and Malappuram districts were deployed to manage the crisis. Investigations into the cause and possible safety violations are ongoing.
