Meta has initiated another round of layoffs affecting various key departments, including Reality Labs, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Unlike previous layoffs that cut across the board, these latest reductions appear to focus on reorganizing specific teams rather than implementing widespread cuts across the entire company. Reports indicate that some employees impacted by these changes have started to resign publicly, including notable figures like Jane Manchun Wong, who gained recognition for unveiling hidden features within Meta’s Threads platform since joining in 2023.
A Meta spokesperson, Dave Arnold, confirmed the layoffs, explaining that the company is restructuring to better align its resources with long-term strategic goals and location strategies. Arnold emphasized that the aim is to realign teams to alternative roles and locations, stating that employees whose positions are eliminated will be offered other opportunities within the company.
These layoffs mark the third wave of cuts within Meta’s Reality Labs division over the past year. The company has been streamlining operations since it first announced significant layoffs in 2022, which resulted in the loss of 11,000 jobs. The rationale behind these cuts stemmed from overestimations regarding post-pandemic growth. Following that, 2023 was declared as Meta’s “year of efficiency,” during which the company reduced its workforce by another 10,000 employees as part of its ongoing effort to improve operational efficiency.
