Ten Waste-to-Natural Gas Plants to Be Established Across Kerala
In collaboration with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), Kerala plans to establish ten large-scale plants dedicated to the production of natural gas from waste. BPCL will oversee the construction of the Brahmapuram plant, while the construction in the remaining nine districts will be managed by either BPCL or GAIL.
Excluding Pathanamthitta, Kasaragod, Idukki, and Wayanad districts, where concerns arose regarding the availability of sufficient waste for the plants, these facilities will have a minimum processing capacity of 100 tonnes per day, with plans to increase it to 250 tonnes in the future.
Existing plants in Kannur and Kozhikode will not receive new installations if they continue to operate.
Under the agreement, the companies will cover construction costs, while the state government will provide essential resources such as land, water, and electricity. The resulting Compressed BioGas (CBG) will be utilized by the partnering companies. An agreement has also been reached with FACT for the sale of compost waste.
Local corporations and municipalities will ensure the daily waste requirement for plant operation, while the government will take responsibility for managing unusable and rejected waste.
The project has garnered praise, with Home Affairs Minister MB Rajesh describing it as a significant step towards addressing Kerala’s waste issue.
