Elon Musk has announced the development of Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia designed to rival Wikipedia, powered by his AI company xAI and its chatbot Grok. The project, Musk claims, will offer a “massive improvement” over the existing platform and aligns with xAI’s broader mission to “understand the universe.” Musk announced Grokipedia in a pair of posts on X on Tuesday.
In one post, Musk invited people to join xAI and “help build Grokipedia,” which he described as an “open-source knowledge repository that is vastly better than Wikipedia!” He said Grokipedia will be available to the public with no usage limits. The AI-powered open-source site would utilise artificial intelligence to automatically correct errors, helping to ensure that Grokipedia content is accurate and factual.
Musk previously accused Wikipedia of being biased for editing the term “recession” more than 180 times in a single week in 2022 and a year later questioned its neutrality and transparency. In December, he suggested Wikipedia users stop donating to the forum due to its alleged $50 million investment in diversity, equity and inclusion projects.
Reactions to Grokipedia have been mixed. Some users welcomed the idea of a new knowledge platform, with one suggesting “Encyclopedia Galactica is a much better name”. Another user expressed enthusiasm, “If Grokipedia actually delivers on this, it could change how knowledge is stored and shared… A multimodal base with audio, video, and image baked in from the start would feel like stepping into a living library.” One user suggested possible partnerships with YouTube and Microsoft, going forward.
