In the soulful rhythm of Vanchipattu, the ceremonial boat, Thiruvonathoni, has reached the holy shores of Aranmula, bearing offerings for Lord Aranmulayappan’s Onasadya. This age-old tradition, rooted in history, begins in Kattur, where the boat is ceremonially launched under the leadership of national figures. The journey to Aranmula is filled with festive music, with the boat gliding through the water as Vanchipattu singers add to the spiritual ambiance.
The Thiruvonathoni brings special dishes from the Kattur temple, including traditional Onam delicacies and offerings such as Deepa, which will be used for the Onasadya, a feast prepared in honor of Lord Aranmulayappan. These offerings are an integral part of the Onam celebration at the temple, and it is customary for the boat to arrive at the temple pier before sunrise. Once the offerings are made to the deity, preparations for the grand feast begin.
After completing its sacred task, the Thiruvonathoni departs in the afternoon, but the spiritual energy and festive mood linger on. This year, the event has attracted participants from 52 countries, adding an international flavor to the centuries-old ritual. Thousands of devotees have gathered at the temple to witness this spectacle, leading to a large crowd at the premises. In light of the growing number of attendees, security measures have been intensified, with a police presence and the use of drones to monitor the crowd and ensure safety.
The annual arrival of Thiruvonathoni is a key highlight of the Onam festival in Aranmula, symbolizing the deep cultural connection to tradition and devotion that marks the celebration of Onam in Kerala.
