Kerala is experiencing heavy rainfall due to the intensifying southwest monsoon, with lightning and thunder affecting various parts of the state since Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued heavy rain until August 17, influenced by a low-pressure trough between Rayalaseema and the Comorin region and cyclonic circulation near north Sri Lanka.
An orange alert has been issued for Ernakulam and Thrissur districts today, August 14, while all other districts, except Kannur and Kasaragod, are under a yellow alert. The latest IMD update warns of moderate to heavy rain with winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram.
In response to the severe weather, the IMD has prohibited fishing along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coasts from August 13 to 17. Fishermen are permitted to fish off the Karnataka coast. The Met office advises the public to exercise extreme caution due to potential traffic disruptions, waterlogging, and falling trees. Residents in flood and landslide-prone areas are encouraged to seek safer locations.
