Punjab Kings Outclass Chennai Super Kings by 18 Runs in High-Scoring Thriller

Despite Dhoni’s explosive cameo, Chennai falls short in 220-run chase; Priyansh Arya shines with a stunning century

Chennai Super Kings faced yet another setback in the IPL 2025 season, suffering their fourth straight loss, this time at the hands of Punjab Kings by a margin of 18 runs. Chasing a daunting target of 220, CSK managed to put up a valiant effort but could only muster 201 runs for 5 wickets. The innings began promisingly with an unbeaten 59-run stand in the powerplay, but the momentum shifted quickly. Glenn Maxwell removed Rachin Ravindra, and Ruturaj Gaikwad followed soon after, leaving Chennai in a spot of bother.

Shivam Dubey, brought in as the impact player, teamed up with Devon Conway to revive the chase, forging a crucial 89-run partnership off 51 deliveries. Dubey scored 42 off 27 balls before being dismissed by Lockie Ferguson in the 16th over. Devon Conway retired hurt in the 18th over, making way for Ravindra Jadeja. MS Dhoni’s entry electrified the crowd as he smashed boundaries in quick succession, including two sixes in the final balls of the 19th over, reigniting Chennai’s hopes.

With 28 runs needed in the final over, all eyes were on Dhoni to pull off another miracle. However, he was dismissed on the very first ball of the 20th over by Yash Thakur, sealing Punjab’s win. Dhoni’s spirited 27 off 12 balls, laced with three towering sixes, was in vain. Earlier, Punjab Kings had posted a formidable total of 216/6, powered by a blistering century from Priyansh Arya, who hammered 103 runs off just 42 balls and was instrumental in setting up the victory.
