Argentina has officially secured a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first South American team to qualify. Their confirmation came on Tuesday without even stepping onto the pitch, as Bolivia’s goalless draw against Uruguay mathematically ensured Argentina’s place in the tournament.
The reigning world champions, who are set to play against their long-time rivals Brazil in Buenos Aires, benefited from Bolivia’s failure to secure a crucial win. Bolivia, currently seventh in the South American qualifying standings with 14 points from 14 games, needed a victory to delay Argentina’s qualification. However, despite creating several goal-scoring opportunities, the Bolivians were repeatedly denied by Uruguay’s goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, who made a series of crucial saves.
The result solidified Argentina’s position at the top of the table with 28 points from 13 matches. Since only four matches remain in the qualification round, Argentina is guaranteed a top-six finish, which is enough for automatic qualification under the new 48-team World Cup format. Meanwhile, Uruguay remains in a strong position to qualify as well, sitting in fourth place with 21 points from 14 matches.
With the 2026 World Cup set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Argentina will now shift its focus to preparing for another title run. Having won the World Cup in 1978, 1986, and most recently in 2022, La Albiceleste will be aiming to lift the prestigious trophy for a fourth time.
