Kerala Tops COVID-19 Fatalities in 2024 with 66 Deaths Reported

State Records Decline in Cases Amid Rising Immunity and Reduced Testing

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala reported the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in the country during 2024, with 66 fatalities recorded between January and December 6. Following Kerala, Karnataka reported 39 deaths, while states such as Maharashtra, Delhi, and Punjab each recorded over 30 deaths, as per data from the Central Government.

In 2024, Kerala confirmed 5,597 COVID-19 cases, a significant decline from the figures reported in previous years. By comparison, the state recorded 87,242 cases and 516 fatalities in 2023, and in 2022, it experienced a staggering 15,83,884 cases and 24,114 deaths.

The current COVID-19 strain, JN 1, was last identified in November 2023, and no new variants have been detected in the country since. However, with mandatory testing no longer enforced, the frequency of COVID-19 testing has drastically reduced. RT-PCR tests are now recommended only for individuals experiencing fever along with severe symptoms, such as breathing difficulties.

Health experts attribute the decline in COVID-19 cases to widespread immunity achieved through vaccinations. According to government data, as of the latest update, only two individuals in Kerala were undergoing treatment for the virus. This highlights the significant improvement in managing and mitigating the spread of COVID-19 within the state. The steady decline in COVID-19 cases in Kerala underscores the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns and public health measures. However, experts warn against complacency, emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance, especially for vulnerable groups. Maintaining hygiene, staying updated on vaccinations, and promptly addressing severe symptoms remain crucial in preventing potential outbreaks. Kerala’s experience serves as a reminder of the evolving nature of pandemics and the need for sustained efforts to protect public health.
