Monkeypox is a viral infection that is transmitted from animals to humans and has symptoms resembling those of smallpox, which was declared eradicated globally in 1980. Although less severe, monkeypox can still cause significant health concerns. The disease is primarily found in Central and West Africa. It was first identified in monkeys in 1958, and the first human case was reported in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
