Famed advertising filmmaker and actor Prakash Varma, who captivated audiences as George Sir in the Malayalam film Thudarum, has turned an iconic film location into his family’s dream home. This scenic house, once featured in Mammootty’s film Kutty Srank, is now reborn as Nakshatra Mana — a beautifully restored mansion blending tradition with contemporary comforts.
Located in Poothotta, near Mammootty’s birthplace Chempu in Kerala, the house sits on the serene banks of the Muvattupuzha River. Designed to capture natural light and breeze, the home offers breathtaking views of the river right from the entrance. The front faces a serene pond, enhancing the structure’s peaceful ambiance, while the vehicle entrance lies at the rear.
True to Kerala’s architectural heritage, the home retains the core elements of a nalukettu, while integrating modern amenities. Antique wooden fittings from dismantled heritage homes in North India were repurposed during the restoration. Skilled carpenters from Kerala handled the intricate reconstruction. Every inch was thoughtfully designed by Varma and his wife Sneha Iype, who also co-founded the Nirvana advertising agency.
Inside, the home features three airy bedrooms on the ground floor, a central courtyard, a classic yet cozy parlour, and a uniquely designed bathroom that collects rainwater. The subtle lighting design includes sensor-activated shelf lights and pastel-toned wall art, including a striking South American piece called Blessing Heart. The upper floor is reserved for quiet reading and writing.
This artistic, eco-conscious home not only reflects Varma’s passion for design but also serves as a tranquil escape from his busy city life.
