Sabarimala Pilgrimage: Guidelines for Carrying Coconuts on Flights Until January 20, 2025

Essential Safety Reminders for Devotees Traveling to the Temple This Season

The Sabarimala temple, located in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, is preparing to welcome pilgrims for its annual Mandala—Makaravilakku season, which begins on November 16 and lasts for two months. In a recent announcement, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) confirmed that, as in previous years, pilgrims are allowed to carry coconuts in their cabin baggage on flights during this pilgrimage season. This permission extends until January 20, 2025, enabling devotees to fulfill their ritualistic practices at the temple.

During their visit, pilgrims typically bring a simple cloth bag known as ‘irumudi kettu,’ which contains various offerings, including coconuts filled with ghee for the ‘Kettunirakkal’ ritual. Additionally, regular coconuts are included to be broken at different sacred locations throughout the pilgrimage. However, these coconuts must undergo standard security procedures, including X-ray screening, Explosive Trace Detection (ETD), and physical inspections before being permitted in the cabin.

Coconuts are generally prohibited in cabin baggage due to their combustible nature. Both dry coconuts and copra, a flammable substance derived from coconut, are not allowed in any form, including checked baggage, as they are classified as a Class 4 risk in cargo. For instance, some airlines, such as SpiceJet, permit coconuts in checked luggage only if they are cut into smaller pieces. For international travel, packaged coconut products are typically allowed.

Broken coconut pieces, especially those used as temple prasada, should be stored in checked baggage. If found in cabin baggage during security checks, airport authorities require passengers to deposit these items in designated containers for restricted items located at the security checkpoint. As the pilgrimage season approaches, it is crucial for devotees to adhere to these guidelines to ensure a safe and smooth journey to Sabarimala.
