Thailand has recently emerged as the top honeymoon destination for Indian couples, surpassing the Maldives, which has long been the go-to spot for romantic getaways. According to MakeMyTrip’s latest report on honeymoon travel, bookings for Thailand have increased significantly by 5.2% year-on-year (YoY), making it the most popular international choice for newlyweds in 2023-24. In contrast, the Maldives saw a 16.2% decline in honeymoon bookings this year, despite its previous dominance. Other destinations such as Indonesia, Mauritius, and Vietnam also saw growth, reflecting a shift in preferences toward more diverse honeymoon experiences.
On the domestic front, the Andaman Islands have outpaced Kerala to become the top choice for Indian honeymooners, experiencing a 6.9% rise in bookings. Kashmir, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, and other regions continue to attract couples seeking local romantic escapes. Meanwhile, international travel has expanded beyond traditional locations, with destinations like Japan, Bhutan, and Malaysia gaining traction. Japanese honeymoon bookings surged by an impressive 388%, reflecting a rising trend toward long-haul and off-the-beaten-path travel.
Indian honeymooners are also increasingly splurging on luxury, with nearly 68% opting for 4- or 5-star accommodations. The trend toward multi-city and extended stays is growing, with more couples choosing longer and more immersive trips. Personalized romantic experiences, including couples’ photoshoots and sunset cruises, are becoming a priority, with a 25% increase in bookings for curated honeymoon packages. This shift indicates a broader trend toward more customized, memorable honeymoon experiences that blend adventure, luxury, and intimacy.
