At the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), celebrated filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, best known for classics like Sholay and Seeta Aur Geeta, emphasized the enduring significance of human creativity in filmmaking, even in an era dominated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking at a session titled Passion for Perfection: Ramesh Sippy’s Philosophy, the iconic director acknowledged the transformative role of technology but warned against relying too heavily on AI.
“AI can enhance the craft, but it will never replicate the human mind’s ingenuity,” Sippy stated. “Technology should be a supporting tool, while the creative process remains guided by human intuition.”
Sippy shared key moments from his illustrious career, particularly the challenges behind creating Sholay. He recounted the extraordinary effort required to perfect scenes, revealing that it took 23 days to shoot a single sequence due to unpredictable weather conditions. The resulting scene, filmed under overcast skies, perfectly captured the intended mood.
Sippy also spoke about the collaborative nature of filmmaking, highlighting how teamwork shapes every aspect of a movie’s production, from scriptwriting to post-production.
For aspiring filmmakers, he offered wisdom on embracing mistakes as part of the creative journey. “Mistakes are valuable lessons. Each failure provides insights for future improvement,” he remarked, urging filmmakers to remain resilient and strive for perfection.
Sippy’s session left the audience inspired, underlining the balance between embracing technological advances and preserving the essence of human storytelling in the evolving world of cinema.
