The Malayalam film industry is grappling with significant financial setbacks in 2024, facing an estimated loss of Rs 650 to Rs 700 crore, according to the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA). In a press statement, KFPA Secretary B. Rakesh revealed that the industry spent around Rs 1,000 crore on the production of 199 new films and five re-released movies. However, the returns were disappointing, with only Rs 350 crore in profit, resulting in heavy losses for producers.
One of the key reasons for this financial strain is the rising demands of actors for high remuneration, which producers have found difficult to meet. Despite multiple requests to reconsider their pay packages, actors remain firm on their rates, putting additional pressure on the industry’s financial stability.
The re-release strategy also failed to generate substantial profits. Of the five re-released films, only “Devadoothan,” directed by Sibi Malayil, performed well, while the others underperformed at the box office. According to the KFPA’s data, only 26 films this year achieved decent box office success, with just five films entering the Rs 100 crore club, a stark contrast to 2023, when only “2018: Everyone is a Hero” crossed this milestone.
Although the industry hoped for better performances from pan-Indian films, most of them failed to create a significant buzz in Kerala, contributing to the overall financial strain. If the current trends continue, the future of the Malayalam film industry remains uncertain, with mounting concerns over its sustainability.
