Kochi: A new organization, the Progressive Filmmakers Association, has emerged in Malayalam cinema under the leadership of director Aashiq Abu and actress Rima Kallingal. The association includes key figures such as directors Anjali Menon, Lijo Jose Pellissery, and Rajeev Ravi, all working together to bring positive changes to the industry. Their mission is to foster a culture of empowerment and uphold the rights of workers in Mollywood.
In an open letter to the film industry, the association stressed its dedication to equality, cooperation, and social justice. It urged filmmakers to adopt a more inclusive approach, ensuring that the rights of every worker in the industry are respected and protected.
Aashiq Abu’s formation of the new group follows his resignation from FEFKA, the leading organization of Malayalam film technicians. His departure was marked by strong criticism of FEFKA’s leadership.
In a related issue, the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) expressed concerns to the Chief Minister about the Reporter channel’s disclosure of sensitive information from the Hema Committee report. The WCC condemned the release of private details, alleging unethical behavior by some individuals with access to the report, and called for immediate action to safeguard privacy and confidentiality.
