As the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections approach, the BJP is on track for a possible third consecutive term in power, while Congress faces challenges due to internal conflicts. The elections are scheduled for October 5, with results expected on October 8.
Congress initially seemed poised for a comeback, but internal familyism has disrupted their campaign. Of the 32 candidates in their first list, 28 are sitting MLAs, with a significant number affiliated with the Bhupendra Singh Hooda faction, while Kumari Selja’s group received far fewer seats. This favoritism continued in later candidate lists.
However, the BJP is not without similar issues, with familyism affecting 11 seats. Notable candidates include Bhavy Bishnoi in Adampur, the daughter of MP Rao Inderjit in Ahirwal, and the grandson of former CM Bhajan Lal.
Both parties experienced internal rebellions after releasing their candidate lists. The BJP managed to address its dissent before the final list was announced, but Congress continues to face internal unrest.
In terms of familyism, Congress has shown a higher rate than the BJP, with 22 candidates having family ties to active leaders. Notable examples include Aditya Surjewala, son of Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala, running in Kaithal, and Pooja Chaudhary, wife of MP Varun Chaudhary, contesting the Mullana (SC) seat.
The BJP has governed Haryana since 2014 and analysts believe they may retain power in 2024, largely due to Congress’s internal struggles. The party’s handling of internal conflicts and familyism has weakened its position, making a comeback less likely.
As election day nears, the BJP has consolidated its position, while Congress’s chances have been hindered by infighting and familyism, potentially leading to another term for the ruling party.
