Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has sparked widespread criticism during his visit to the United States. His remarks on the situation of Sikhs in India, as well as his meeting with American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, have attracted backlash both domestically and internationally.
During a Sikh community event in Virginia, Gandhi posed questions to Sikh journalist Bhalinder Virmani, asking if Sikhs in India are allowed to wear turbans and Karas freely, and if they face any restrictions when visiting Gurudwaras. His comments were soon amplified by the Khalistani group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which used them to further their anti-India rhetoric.
Adding to the controversy, Gandhi’s meeting with Ilhan Omar, an American MP known for her critical views on India and her previous visit to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), drew concerns. Omar has previously expressed pro-Pakistan sentiments, making Gandhi’s association with her a point of contention for critics.
Bhalinder Virmani, the Sikh journalist questioned by Gandhi, refuted his claims, saying he had never faced issues with wearing religious symbols or visiting Gurudwaras in India. Virmani expressed confusion over Gandhi’s comments, calling them baseless.
Even within the Congress party, dissatisfaction has emerged. Senior Congress leader Laxman Singh from Madhya Pradesh, brother of former CM Digvijaya Singh, voiced his frustration on social media. He criticized Gandhi’s US tour for being highly controversial, especially due to the meeting with Ilhan Omar, writing: “Enough, Leaderji!”
Members of the Indian diaspora have also raised concerns about Gandhi’s leadership capabilities, questioning whether his actions reflect a lack of understanding of India’s global image. Critics argue that his controversial meeting with Omar undermines India’s reputation.
Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about Sikh freedoms in India and his meeting with Ilhan Omar continue to face scrutiny. As the political fallout grows, the implications for his political future and India’s foreign relations remain uncertain.
