Why Over 50% of EV Owners Are Considering Switching Back to Petrol-Diesel Cars

Electric vehicles (EVs) are often hailed as the future of transportation, with many governments worldwide, including India, advocating for their adoption. Despite the growth in India’s EV market, a recent survey has revealed that over 50% of electric car owners are dissatisfied with their purchase and are considering switching back to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles like petrol, diesel, or CNG-powered cars.

Survey Insights: The survey, conducted by Park Plus, focused on 500 EV owners across Delhi, NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Key findings include:

51% Dissatisfaction: More than half of the electric car owners surveyed expressed reluctance to buy another EV, citing multiple issues with their current vehicles.

Charging Infrastructure: The primary concern for 88% of respondents is the accessibility and functionality of charging stations. Despite India having over 20,000 EV charging stations, owners reported poor visibility and difficulty in locating these stations. Many owners prefer short urban trips of less than 50 km due to charging limitations.

Maintenance Challenges: A significant 73% of respondents felt that their EVs were like a “black box,” with maintenance issues that local mechanics couldn’t address. This often necessitates visits to authorized dealers, complicating the maintenance process.

Resale Value Concerns: Approximately 33% of EV owners expressed worry about the low resale value of their vehicles. The resale quotes they received were significantly lower than expected, affecting their overall satisfaction with the EV purchase.

These insights underscore the challenges faced by current EV owners, including inadequate charging infrastructure, maintenance difficulties, and concerns about resale value. While EVs are promoted as a sustainable alternative to ICE vehicles, these issues suggest that improvements are needed to address consumer concerns and enhance the overall EV ownership experience.
