Kerala has been experiencing intense rainfall for the last 24 hours as the southwest monsoon intensified under the influence of westerly winds over the Kerala coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday. Several other districts are under yellow alert as the rain continues to impact most areas.
In Kottayam, the district collector announced a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Wednesday. Reports indicate heavy rain has been ongoing in the district since Tuesday night. Similarly, in Idukki, the district collector declared that all educational institutions, including professional colleges, will remain closed in Devikulam panchayat on Wednesday.
Ernakulam has reported mudslides in the hilly areas, and waterlogging continues to disrupt normal life. With the water level in the Periyar River rising, the shutters of Kallarkutty and Pambla dams were opened on Wednesday morning.
In North Kerala, Kozhikode and Kannur districts have reported several damages due to the heavy rain. In Kannur, a car was destroyed after a compound wall collapsed on it amid the rain.
