Thrissur: The death toll in the devastating explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Thrissur has risen to 13. Around 40 people have been injured in the incident, with those seriously hurt shifted to Thrissur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Following the tragedy, District Collector Shikha Surendran has ordered a magisterial-level inquiry. The Thrissur Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) has been tasked with investigating the cause of the explosion and its aftermath. The Disaster Management Authority is closely monitoring the situation, while rescue operations are being coordinated by the District Emergency Operations Centre. The State Emergency Operations Centre is also providing necessary support and guidance.
The explosion occurred at a fireworks storage facility in Mundathikode. The first blast was reported around 2:30 PM, followed by a series of explosions. The impact was so powerful that window panes of nearby houses were shattered.
The site was reportedly being used to prepare fireworks for both the sample display and the main event at the Thiruvambady Temple. Large quantities of explosives were believed to have been stored there. Among the injured is a licensed fireworks operator, Mundathikode Satheesh.
Fire and rescue units from six stations rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations. Officials from both Thrissur and Palakkad districts were directed to assist in the efforts.
Health Minister Veena George has instructed authorities to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. Emergency medical arrangements have been set up at Thrissur Medical College and the General Hospital. Additional ambulances, including 108 services, have been deployed, and private hospitals have also been placed on alert. A mass casualty management system has been activated.
State Police Chief Ravada Chandrasekhar reviewed the situation and held discussions with senior police officials. The Thrissur Deputy Inspector General (DIG) has been directed to reach the site and oversee further actions.
