The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recorded an impressive enrollment for its Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum in the 2024-25 academic year. Nearly 8 lakh secondary students and over 50,000 senior secondary students have opted for AI as a skill subject, indicating growing interest in this cutting-edge field. Spread across Classes VIII to XII, the AI curriculum aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasizing 21st-century skills to prepare students for a technology-driven future.
The AI program, introduced in 2019, has been designed to progress from foundational concepts to advanced real-world applications. Students begin in Class VIII with an introduction to AI’s possibilities and its ethical implications. By Class IX, they explore neural networks, basic Python programming, and projects tied to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The curriculum evolves in Class X to cover data science, computer vision, and natural language processing (NLP), supported by advanced Python programming.
In Classes XI and XII, the focus shifts to deeper technical and conceptual learning. Students gain insights into AI methodologies, ethical decision-making, and mathematical foundations. They also learn clustering techniques, regression analysis, and develop capstone projects, which enable them to solve real-world challenges while mastering the AI model lifecycle and data storytelling.
CBSE’s initiative is a significant step toward bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry needs. By integrating AI into school education, students gain critical technical and ethical perspectives, equipping them for an evolving global landscape. However, the success of this program hinges on robust teacher training, comprehensive resources, and regular updates to keep the curriculum aligned with technological advancements.
