Starting with the 2024-2025 academic year, Kerala’s Plus One admissions under the Community Quota will transition to a streamlined single window system, known as ‘ekajalakam’. This new system aims to replace the current decentralized approach, where individual school authorities manage applications and manually enter data. The shift to a centralized digital platform intends to standardize and simplify the application process, ensuring greater transparency and accountability.
Under the Community Quota, 20 percent of seats in aided schools managed by specific communities, particularly those in backward or minority categories, are reserved for students from those same communities. However, concerns have been raised regarding certain managements allegedly bypassing quota guidelines. This reform will help address these issues by establishing a more regulated application process.
In the 2023 admissions cycle, a total of 24,253 seats were allocated under the community quota, of which only 21,347 were filled, leaving 2,906 seats vacant. The new single-window system is expected to maximize seat occupancy and create a fairer process for all eligible students, especially given that the 20 percent reserved seats in aided schools fall under the management quota. By centralizing applications through ekajalakam, Kerala hopes to improve equity and accessibility in its education system, supporting students from minority communities and reducing instances of seat misallocation.
