Court to Announce Sentence in Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case Today

Sanjay Roy Faces Death Penalty or Life Imprisonment After Being Convicted of Brutal Crime

The Sealdah court in Kolkata is set to announce the sentencing for Sanjay Roy, convicted of raping and murdering a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Saturday, Judge Anirban Das declared Roy guilty of the crime, and the victim’s parents were present during the court session.

Roy’s conviction followed forensic analysis, which identified his DNA at the crime scene and on the victim’s body, confirming his involvement in the horrific crime. The judge noted that Roy could face the death penalty as the maximum punishment, while life imprisonment remains the minimum possible sentence.

The case, which took place in August 2024, triggered widespread public outrage. In response, the High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI, which subsequently filed charges in the sessions court. The Supreme Court also intervened to establish guidelines ensuring the safety of medical professionals at their workplace.

However, before the verdict, the victim’s parents expressed their dissatisfaction with the investigation, claiming that others involved in the crime remain free. They vowed to continue their pursuit of justice. Several cases related to the incident were filed, including those against the former principal of the college, Sandip Ghosh, and the police officer in charge who mishandled the case. Despite delays, the CBI focused on Sanjay Roy, the primary accused, as the only individual facing charges.
