New Delhi: Thick fog blanketed Delhi early Saturday, causing significant disruptions at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). The reduced visibility resulted in delays for 92 flights and forced six others to be diverted to alternate airports. Despite being equipped with advanced Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), the airport struggled to manage the dense fog’s impact on operations.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) confirmed the disruptions through a social media post, urging passengers to stay connected with their airlines for real-time updates. IndiGo Airlines, India’s leading carrier, temporarily suspended arrivals and departures, citing safety concerns due to low visibility. The airline also warned of delays even after flights resumed, as airside congestion remained a challenge. Air India similarly acknowledged disruptions not only in Delhi but across northern India.
The situation mirrors Friday’s chaos, where over 400 flights faced delays due to similar weather conditions. The ongoing fog has highlighted recurring challenges faced by air travel in Delhi during the winter season. While IGIA’s advanced systems and trained pilots handle low-visibility conditions well, the severity of the fog continues to impact schedules.
