Farewell Vistara: Tata Group’s Premier Airline to Fly Its Last Journey

Tata Group's Vistara to Officially Merge with Air India, Redefining India's Aviation Landscape

Kochi: On November 11, Vistara, Tata Group’s luxury airline launched in collaboration with Singapore Airlines (SIA), will take its final flight, marking a new chapter in Indian aviation. The merger, set for completion by Monday night, will result in SIA investing an additional ₹3,194.5 crore into Air India. This investment will give SIA a 25.1% stake in the merged Air India entity, which consolidates SIA’s 49% stake in Vistara and a cash investment of ₹2,058.5 crore. Tata Group’s airline portfolio will now streamline to two main airlines: Air India and Air India Express. This follows AIX Connect’s (formerly AirAsia) merger with Air India Express last month.

Since Vistara’s launch on January 9, 2015, it has been recognized for its premium service and quality, making a significant impact in the aviation sector. The November 2022 announcement to merge with Air India came after Tata took ownership of Air India from the government. This consolidation leaves Air India and IndiGo controlling approximately 90% of the Indian domestic air travel market, with Jet and Akasa Air holding the remaining market share. Together, Air India and Air India Express boast a fleet of 300 aircraft, while IndiGo operates the largest single-fleet size of 413 aircraft.

As this merger leads to a near-duopoly, experts and passengers alike are expressing concerns that reduced competition may lead to increased ticket prices. With the merging of these aviation giants, Tata Group’s influence over Indian air travel is set to shape the industry’s future for years to come.
