India has confirmed its first case of M Pox, a viral disease similar to smallpox, according to an official statement by the Ministry of Health. The disease was detected in a young man who had recently returned from West Africa and was under medical observation. Initially, the Ministry had ruled out the presence of M Pox, but later issued a revised statement confirming the case. The patient has been diagnosed with the West African Clade 2 variant of the virus, which has been circulating since July 2022.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that this is an isolated case linked to international travel, and there is no immediate cause for concern. The government has warned all states to remain vigilant, though it reassured the public that the current situation does not reflect the global health emergency declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) due to the Clade 1 variant of M Pox.
The central government is on high alert and has scheduled a high-level meeting to assess the situation. Authorities are currently preparing a contact list of individuals who may have been exposed to the patient. Monkeypox, which is transmitted from animals to humans, presents milder symptoms compared to smallpox, a related orthopoxvirus that was eradicated globally in 1980.
