Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Saturday as Kuki demonstrators clashed with security forces, leaving one protester dead and over 40 injured, including women and policemen. The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Lalgouthang Singsit, succumbed to bullet injuries sustained during clashes at Keithelmanbi.
The unrest began when police fired tear gas to disperse Kuki protesters opposing Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive allowing free movement across the state. Protesters set fire to private vehicles and attempted to stop a state transport bus traveling from Imphal to Senapati district. At least 16 protesters were injured, with unofficial reports suggesting over 23 civilian injuries.
Manipur Police reported that 27 security personnel were injured during the clashes, claiming that armed miscreants among the protesters fired at them, forcing retaliation. The police emphasized their use of “minimum force” to control the violent mob.
The situation escalated further as protesters blocked NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur highway) by burning tires and felling trees. The Kuki-Zo Council imposed an indefinite shutdown in Kuki-Zo areas, opposing the free movement initiative and demanding a separate administration.
The Federation of Civil Society (FOCS), a Meitei organization, attempted a peace march but was halted by security forces due to lack of permission. FOCS members argued they were following Shah’s directive, while Kuki-Zo volunteers warned against any attempts to enter their areas without a separate administration.
The Kuki-Zo Council urged the central government to address underlying issues to prevent further unrest, stating they cannot guarantee the safety of Meiteis in buffer zones. The clashes highlight the deep-rooted tensions in Manipur, with calls for immediate intervention to restore peace and public safety.
