Kerala is witnessing a significant surge in electricity consumption as temperatures rise this summer, with daily usage exceeding 10 crore units since May 4. The increase is primarily due to higher nighttime temperatures, which have risen by 2-3 degrees Celsius. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) predicts that consumption could reach up to 12 crore units per day as the heat intensifies in the coming weeks.
To meet the rising demand and avoid power cuts, KSEB has secured additional electricity from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh through short-term contracts. Currently, only 1.78 crore units are generated within the state, with the rest being sourced externally.
On May 7, consumption reached 10.27 crore units, nearing last year’s record of 11.59 crore units on May 3. To help consumers manage their bills, KSEB offers a 10% reduction in daytime rates, while nighttime rates are 25% higher. Experts recommend using appliances like washing machines, mixers, and induction cookers during the day and adjusting air conditioners scientifically to optimize energy use.
As the heatwave continues, KSEB urges consumers to adopt energy-saving practices to reduce the strain on the power grid and minimize the impact on electricity bills. Authorities are also advising residents to adopt energy-efficient habits, such as using LED bulbs, unplugging unused devices, and minimizing the use of high-power appliances during peak hours. By taking these small but impactful steps, consumers can not only lower their electricity bills but also contribute to reducing the overall demand, ensuring a stable power supply for everyone during this challenging summer season.
