Bengaluru: Amid continuous heavy rains in the Bengaluru Urban district, the authorities have declared a holiday for all Anganwadi centers, private, and aided primary and secondary schools on Wednesday. This decision was announced by Jagadeesh G, Chairman of the Bengaluru Urban District Disaster Management Authority and Deputy Commissioner, in response to the persistent downpour that has disrupted daily life.
However, degree, postgraduate, diploma, engineering, and ITI colleges are not included in the holiday. College authorities have been issued an advisory to prioritize the safety of students. Principals are advised to ensure that classes are conducted only if students can safely commute. They must also inspect the structural integrity of college buildings, especially older ones, to prevent accidents during the rainy season.
To compensate for any missed class time, the district administration suggested holding extra sessions on Saturday afternoons or Sundays. Additionally, parents, students, and college staff are urged to avoid waterlogged areas and check the safety of student transport vehicles. Colleges are also encouraged to educate students on disaster preparedness and handling emergencies during natural calamities.
Bengaluru has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Tuesday afternoon, leading to flooding on many roads. The return journey from school was challenging for children, with many having to wade through waterlogged streets. The Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy to moderate rain in the city over the next five days, further impacting daily life.
