
New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a significant milestone in its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) by reducing the distance between two satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), to just 15 metres. This progress marks an important step toward achieving in-space docking capabilities. After reaching this proximity, the satellites were moved back to a safe distance to analyze the collected data and prepare for the next critical phase of docking.
In a post shared on X, ISRO highlighted the excitement of the mission, stating, “At 15 metres, we see each other clearer and clearer, we are just 50 feet away for an exciting handshake.” Both satellites are reported to be in optimal condition, as per updates from the agency.
Launched on December 30 aboard the PSLV C60 rocket, the 220-kilogram satellites were placed in a 475-kilometre circular orbit from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The mission’s primary goal is to demonstrate and validate the technology required for satellite docking in space.
If successfully executed, the SpaDeX mission will position India as the fourth country to develop advanced space docking technology, paving the way for ambitious future projects. These include the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and a potential lunar astronaut landing, solidifying India’s standing in the global space exploration arena.
