Experienced High Court Judge Set to Join the Apex Court, Will Serve as Future Chief Justice of India

Justice Bagchi’s legal career spans over 13 years in the High Court judiciary. He was initially appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. In January 2021, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court, where he served briefly before returning to the Calcutta High Court in November 2021. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience in handling various aspects of the law, contributing significantly to the judicial system.

Ranked 11th in the combined all-India seniority list of High Court judges, including Chief Justices, Justice Bagchi’s elevation was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium on March 6, 2025. The collegium, headed by Justice Khanna, also included Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Abhay S. Oka, and Justice Vikram Nath. The Union government approved his appointment on March 10, 2025.

Future Role as Chief Justice of India

Born on October 3, 1966, Justice Bagchi is expected to have a tenure of over six years in the Supreme Court. Significantly, he is also in line to become the Chief Justice of India, succeeding Justice K.V. Viswanathan upon his retirement on May 25, 2031. Justice Bagchi will serve as CJI until his retirement on October 2, 2031.

His appointment marks a significant moment for the Calcutta High Court, as no judge from this court has assumed the role of CJI since Justice Altamas Kabir’s retirement in 2013. With his vast experience and judicial acumen, Justice Bagchi is expected to make notable contributions to India’s judicial system and legal landscape.
