New Delhi: RailTel Corporation of India Limited (RailTel), a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, has been awarded a ₹288 crore contract to deploy the Kavach anti-collision system across 71 railway stations. The project aims to improve train safety and operational efficiency by covering 502 route kilometers (RKM) of tracks in the Danapur and Sonpur divisions of East Central Railway.
Kavach is an indigenous automatic train protection (ATP) system designed to prevent collisions by automatically applying brakes when a train crosses a signal at danger or if a potential collision is detected. RailTel, in its filing with the stock exchanges, emphasized that this initiative marks one of its largest signalling projects.
According to RailTel Chairman and Managing Director Sanjai Kumar, the company is committed to modernizing railway infrastructure and enhancing passenger safety through state-of-the-art digital solutions. He expressed confidence that the RailTel team is well-equipped to execute the project successfully, setting new benchmarks in railway safety and efficiency.
The Kavach system employs advanced technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID), GPS, and data loggers to track train operations in real-time. One of its key benefits is its ability to ensure safe train operations even in extreme weather conditions, including dense fog, heavy rainfall, and high temperatures. The system also improves visibility and communication between locomotives and railway stations via a dedicated radio network.
RailTel believes that implementing the Kavach system will not only prevent train accidents but also reinforce its position as a leader in railway technology. This project aligns with the government’s vision of modernizing the rail network and leveraging digital transformation to ensure safer and more efficient train operations.
